With the successful fight to save Basic Health last legislative session under our belts Sisters Organize for Survival is just getting started! We know that the fight to defend the most vulnerable is not over. Budget deficits and further cuts loom. Basic Health and other services are not safe as long as their funding relies on regressive and unstable sources, such as "sin" and sales taxes. These taxes also unfairly put the heaviest burden on those with the lowest incomessuch as single moms, elders, unemployed youth, people with disabilities, and the homeless.
SOS believes that in order to keep vital services, Washington State must have real tax reforms! In the campaign to save Basic health, SOS called for instituting a steeply graduated income tax on the rich and corporate profits. We demanded an end to balancing the budget on the backs of poor and working people in this state!
For this reason, SOS is gathering signatures to get Initiative 1098 on the November ballot. I-1098 would establish an income tax on individuals earning above $200,000 and couples earning above $400,000. It would reduce the property tax and relieve taxes on small businesses. Passing this initiative would be an important first step in changing Washington 's highly regressive tax structure.
Together we can stop programs from being pitted against each other in every legislative session. We can't depend on politicians who have failed to build a secure future for Washingtonians! Let's work together to ensure a wide safety net for all people and enact real change in this society! We deserve this and more!
Stop balancing the budget on the backs of poor and working people! No more regressive taxes! Institute a steeply graduated income tax on millionaires! Tax corporate profits!
JOIN THE FIGHT!
