Planning Meeting:
Mobilize to Tax the Rich
Sisters Organize for Survival (SOS) is mobilizing grassroots support to pass Initiative 1098 -- a tax on the wealthy to pay for education and health care.
Your collaboration is vital! Attend SOS meetings to build for a community forum about the need to tax the rich and why people should vote yes on I-1098. We'll strategize for an outreach campaign, make calls to supporters, prep mailings, write letters to the editor and more.
I-1098 would fund education and health care by establishing a tax on individuals earning over $200,000 and couples earning above $400,000. It also provides tax relief to small businesses. This initiative is an opportunity to change Washington's regressive tax structure. Currently, the wealthiest pay less than 3% of their income in taxes while the poorest pay over 17%. Enough already -- it's time for the rich to pay their fair share!

Feminists respond to "The End of Men"
Join a discussion about a widely publicized article, "The End of Men," from The Atlantic Magazine. The controversial piece asks why gender roles are changing in modern society. Is it biological differences between women and men? The gains of the feminist movement? Or an economy dependent on exploitation?
Other meeting topics: An assessment of the Sisters Organize for Survival's community outreach campaign to save Basic Health by taxing the wealthy. And plans to attend the September 17 and September 29 state pharmacy board meetings to testify on why pharmacies should be required to fill prescriptions rather than exerting "moral discretion."

Sisters Organize for Survival Meeting
Come build grassroots community support for an income tax on the wealthy. Be part of mobilizing for Initiative 1098, which is on the ballot this November. It would establish a tax on individuals earning above $200,000 and couples earning above $400,000. Passing I-1098 would be an important first step in changing Washington’s regressive tax structure, which unfairly penalizes the poor and working folks. Everyone is invited to share their ideas about shifting the tax burden to the wealthiest in order to prevent jobs and services for women, children and youth, immigrants and the poor from being slashed. Your thoughts and collaboration are needed.

Call-in to Save Basic Health!
Take action for health care on International Human Rights Day! Contact elected officials to demand funding for Washington State's Basic Health Plan. The program provides subsidized health insurance to low-income people. A $238 million budget cut has already forced thousands off the plan. It's unacceptable!
Dial on your own, or drop in at New Freeway Hall (address below) to call. Also help phone bank Thursday, Dec. 10 anytime from 10am to 7pm to remind others to call.
Please call:
Gov. Christine Gregoire - 360-902-4111
Sen. Karen Keiser - 360-786-7664 / 800-562-6000
Health & Long-Term Care Committee Chair
Rep. Eileen Cody - 360-786-7978 / 800-562-6000
Health Care & Wellness Committee Chair
Urge them to:
- Rescind cuts to the Basic Health plan budget, and stop increases to rates and deductibles.
- Extend the program to cover the 900,000 uninsured residents of Washington state.
- Pay for the plan and all social services by taxing the income of the wealthy and profits of large corporations.

Sidewalk Rally against Health Care Humbugs
Tell State Democrats
"Don't Scrooge Around With Basic Health"
Washington State Democrats are holding a holiday party at the Convention Center to "celebrate the year's victories." What are they thinking? The Basic Health Plan and other vital services are on the chopping block, unemployment is rising, national health "deform" is undermining the rights of women and immigrants, and the war in the Middle East is expanding. Basic Health already has more people on the waiting list than are on the plan. Thousands more will be forced off due to rate increases. Governor Gregoire is threatening to eliminate the whole program, which provides vital medical coverage to the working poor.
Express your outrage! Demand that politicians preserve and expand the Basic Health Plan and other survival needs by instituting an income tax on corporate profits and the wealthy.
Meet at the corner of 8th Ave. and Pike St. in downtown Seattle this Sunday, Dec. 6 at 4:30pm. If you want, come dressed in bandages and rags - like someone who couldn't afford medical care after getting run over by a reindeer!
Help make signs and other props at New Freeway Hall, 5018 Rainier Ave. S., Seattle, WA 98118 on Thursday, December 3 at 7pm, and Saturday, December 5 at 11am.

Make your voice heard at a
Community Tribunal to
Save the Basic Health Plan
Governor Gregoire and the Washington State Legislature have slashed $238 million from the budget for the Basic Health Plan. Rate hikes that go into effect on January 1 will force thousands to lose coverage.
Health care is a right. Basic Health should be expanded to include the 800,000 residents without medical coverage. The solution is to tax the profits of large corporations and the income of the wealthy. Human needs must come first in public spending.
Take part in a people's court. The charge:
Governor Gregoire and the state Legislature
have abandoned poor and working people.
• Hear from individuals and health care workers impacted by the budget cuts!
• Come tell your story!
• Join the campaign to preserve and expand Basic Health!
The event is at the Rainier Community Center, 4600 - 38th Ave. S., in Seattle (one block east of Rainier Ave. S., between S. Alaska and S. Oregon, across from Rainier Playfield). Children are welcome and the building is wheelchair accessible. The gathering is sponsored by Sisters Organize for Survival, a campaign of Radical Women.
Your help is needed for outreach, mailings, petitioning and more! Please attend the weekly mobilizing meetings (click here for info). Call 206-722-6057 or email RWseattle@mindspring.com to volunteer or for more information.
