SOS takes the offensive against attacks on services and workers!

Dear Friends,

Sisters Organize for Survival (SOS), a campaign of Radical Women, began and ended 2010 with spirited rallies to protest Governor Gregoire's cuts to education and public services. In January, we mobilized the "State of the Emergency Rally" on the Capitol steps. Last Saturday, with barely a day's notice, SOS led another demonstration at the Capitol outside Governor Gregoire's special budget-slashing session. Joining the action were Parents Organizing for Welfare and Economic Rights (POWER) and other grassroots activists from Olympia. We sang pro-human services holiday carols while legislators passed by on their way to the hearings. See our signs and banners and read about the rally at: UPDATE: Legislature starts session to cut budget and Wash. lawmakers OK special session budget plan

SOS thinks it is totally insane to balance the budget on the backs of poor and working people when there is money to be found by ending all tax preferences to some of the richest corporations in the nation! Washington can more than make up the shortfall by ending the multi-billion dollar tax breaks that it bestows on war-profiteer Boeing, plus Microsoft, Amazon, Starbucks, and other corporate giants among us. If the handouts to business were stopped, permanent housing could be found for every person living in the streets and no one would be without health care.

Though elected officials gutted funding for education and services in record speed, SOS is resolved to continue to work with other groups and individuals to build a strong and militant fight-back! Please take part in this crucial movement to defend students, public workers and the most vulnerable.
